The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC)’s board of directors has unanimously voted in favour of endorsing an oath for general counsel. Drafted and spearheaded by Simon Zinger, group general counsel at Dentsu and an ACC member, the Oath is an opportunity for general counsel and other in-house leaders to recommit to ethical conduct in their practice and pursue other actions to benefit their teams and organizations.
Modelled on the Hippocratic Oath, the General Counsel Oath initiative urges general counsel to “go beyond stated rules, codes and guidance to act with integrity, honesty, and… the highest ethical and professional values.”
The Oath addresses these pillars: Professional Responsibility & Ethics; Leadership, Diversity & Inclusion; Social Impact & Pro Bono; Internal Clients; External Parties; and Personal Behaviour.
The Oath is suggested for existing and incoming General Counsel or individuals in equivalent leadership roles such as Chief Legal Officer, Legal Director, Chief Compliance Officer or Chief Ethics Officer. It can be used globally.
